This is an attempt to do a portrait using a gray scale under-painting and then applying color washes  on top of the under-painting.  Now that it is done and I’ve had some time to look at it I can see a lot of problems (especially with the face structure and the lip color) but I learned a good deal.  Hopefully the next one will turn out better.
